School Engagement

Interactions - 1 term or 3 term programme

Addressing disengagement or challenging behaviour through creative activity

A highly successful programme which has been delivered in Hackney since 2000.

Interactions provides opportunities for young people at risk of exclusion aged 13 – 19, to develop life skills through the arts.

The project signposts them to positive destinations in education, employment and training.

Using creative strategies, we motivate disengaged students by unpicking the feelings and behaviours that led to their potential exclusion.

Participants explore the emotional aspects of their problems and ‘rehearse’ alternative behaviours. Young people are able to identify and articulate feelings and learn to manage difficult situations better.

At the end of each programme, the students present their work to peers, parents and teachers.

This builds self-esteem and provides an occasion for young people to demonstrate what they can achieve.

This success can lead to a greater confidence in other areas of learning

“OFSTED were very impressed with the workshop when they visited impromptu. Emotional intelligence through drama is definitely something we want to continue offering our learners.”
